Background

Hearing the first track from Bryan Adams So Far So Good, in the back of my parents car. That record was the sole reason I wanted to play the guitar. Due to the kindness of my grandparents, at the age of 6 years old I began to play a small classical guitar; that had an impossibly high action of, what would still be today an inch at the 12th fret. I have fond memories of learning to navigate the fret board, discovering how to improvise, much to the bewilderment of my strictly classical teacher.

I was brought up by my parents, in an emersion of Irish Folk, Rock and Classical Music, and was encouraged to further my studies as an multi instrumentalist at the University of Westminster, London.

I live near the mountains with my wife and kids, in North Wales UK – the outer territories of Snowdonia National Park. We relocated from London around ten years ago - these are stunning landscapes, and we’re loving raising our kids here. We live in an old cottage, where we’ve converted the main room as the studio I work from.

Experience

I’ve scored commercials and branded content for the last ten years full time, while having the privilege of scoring several box office documentaries. Working remotely to the U.S and Europe for the duration of that time, we’ve made some really great friends along the way. In the last few years, I’ve furthered my passion for great sounding records, investing into a few artists, giving my time as a record producer.

Approach to Film Scoring

I have an easy going personality, and work diligently. I generally write best to a strong edit, although many times I’ve worked with film that’s in its early stages of development. For commercials and branded content, once time is booked in my schedule, I typically turn around a first draft in two days, and we progress quickly to the finished product together.

Once we have mapped out a clear path for the score - I write with a view to harness live acoustic instruments, hardware synthesis and solo/ensemble players. We rarely use sample instruments in the final work. Every film has musicians uniquely express their music live direct to picture, investing into the film’s impact and longevity.

Artisan, is a word I’d use to describe my process. I naturally resonate with films that have a raw, human dimension to their narrative and subjects.
